The story of Joseph shares many characteristics with heroes in their epics and according to Campbell's description of a hero's journey, Joseph is an epic hero. Although The story of Joseph may not exhibit all the stages in Campbell's description, Joseph's journey is definitely worthy enough to be considered as a hero's story.

The Call to Adventure
Joseph was the son of Jacob and Rachel. He lived in the land of Canaan with 12 siblings. Joseph was Jacob's favorite son, supported by the gift from his father: coat of many colors. Joseph's call to adventure may not be as standard as other epics, but they do show an element of supernatural aid. Joseph had two dreams that will foretell his future and cause his brothers to plot against him. The first dream: Joseph and his brothers were gathering grains and the grains of his brothers bowed to his own. The second dream: The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed to Joseph himself.

These dreams made Joseph's brothers furious and they plotted to kill him. They later decided to sell him to merchants who were on their way to Egypt. This indicates Joseph's call to adventure because he is, for the first time, facing adversity and the unknown. Joseph had no choice but to begin his journey as his brothers forced him into one.

Supernatural Aid
Joseph receives divine aid from God throughout his journey, beginning with his dreams that he will prosper. God said that he will always be with him and that he will always be beside him no matter the situation. When Joseph was faced with the Pharaoh of Egypt, the Pharaoh found favor within Joseph because he had advised the pharaoh about the famine. It was through the help of God that Joseph was able to interpret the dream for the Pharaoh and advised him to prepare against the famine.

Genesis 39:2-5 "The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands. So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had."

Crossing the First Threshold/Temptation
Joseph was sold into slavery and he had to find favor with the people around him by maintaining his character and faith. Through these demonstrations, Joseph showed the people of foreign land that he was meant for greatness. Joseph's character supported God's decision to bless him. Joseph remained faithful to God every step of his journey. Eventually Joseph was sold as a servant to the captain of the guards. Potiphar, wife of the captain, tempted Joseph but he rejected her advances and was falsely accused of rape. This whole time Joseph remained true to himself and followed God. Joseph was sent to prison. The keeper of the prison even found that Joseph was special and made him in charge of other prisoners.

the sight of the keeper of the prison."

Joseph always took the choices that were "right" even though it may had led to suffering Joseph remained himself and had faith in God.

Atonement with Father
Joseph's biggest challenge was forgiving his brothers. When they were brought upon him, despite plotting to kill him and selling him, Joseph found it in himself to forgive his family. Joseph is a strong hero physically and psychologically.

Joseph's ability to attract trust is within himself for being an honest man and through faith to his god. A man that will do no wrong and stay on the side of justice. Joseph used this gift to save others from suffering and brought happiness to himself and his family.
