The Divine Comedy: Dante's Inferno

Dante's theory in inferno states that the punishment system is based on the Christian value. The suitability of the penalties to the sins in the inferno is that the punishment correlates with the sin. For whatever injustices were committed against God during the life time, they will have to pay it back equally by suffering in hell. According to Dante, there are different levels of hell that correspond with the severity of the sins. Individuals who contradict or defy God suffer the most. Therefore, pagans and people who betray Christianity were placed in the lower sections of hell. The punishment gets worst as you go deeper.

The differences between upper and lower hell depends on the the type and severity of sins. The upper levels consist of virtuous pagans and those who were self-indulgence. Participants of these levels committed light sins of lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, pride, envy and wrath. They are the type that were distracted from God by trying to obtain objects on earth, whether it be money, food, or sex. The lower levels include those that brought harm to others or themselves. The lower sections correspond with fraud and malice. Those that manipulated, stole, misled, or committed murder against others will end up in the lower levels. The lowest section of hell is the place for traitors that betrayed their fellow men and God.

A possible difference between Dante's perspective and ours is that, regardless of the severity of sins, we all would still go to one hell for punishment with no different sections. Dante believes that those who committed sins during their life time will pay equally by suffering in hell. We believe that God is merciful and can decide if you can be forgiven for your sins after death. The lord will embrace his children at the gates of heaven.
