1. In the epic of Gilgamesh, an assembly of gods wanted to punish man for their sins so they created great storms and a flood to wipe out all men. Utnapishtim was sparred by a goddess who wanted to preserve life on earth so she told him, through his dreams, to build a giant boat out of his house and to gather members to help him on this journey to survive the wrath of the gods. The goddess also told him to gather every species of animals. After Utnapishtim survived the flood, he was recognize and granted immortality like the gods.
Unlike the story of Noah and the great flood in Genesis 6-9, Utnaphistim took more than just his family members on the boat. He had a pilot and some craftsmen. The people who were on the boat with Utnaphistim did not gain divine favors themselves like Noah's family but just through associations. The gods not directly selective with the humans that may survive the flood. Also the blessings that both hero received after the flood was very different. Utnapishtim was granted immortality that matched the gods while Noah was to repopulate the earth and be in charge of the animals. The story of Noah's ark explained God's disappointment in mankind for being evil, so he decided to start over with a selected group of worthy humans and animals. The two tales harbor similarities but mainly different on morals and emphases.
2. In the epic of Gilgamesh the gods provide support to the main character through dreams and blessings and through physical forces to help the hero. When fighting Humbaba, Shamash ,a god, sent down winds to disable the monster and the heroes were able to defeat him. However there are instances when the hero did not receive divine intervention when needed. When Gilgamesh rejected Ishtar, he had no help from the gods which in turn caused Enkidu's death which was the pivot point of the story. This is very similar from the divine interventions from the gods in the Odyssey and Aeneid. The gods in Homer's epics help guide the heroes through their journey emphasizing the idea of domination through divinity and that humans need gods to succeed in their heroic quest. In these stories, divine interventions mark the limitation of humanities. Athena had to interfere often in human affairs to help the protagonist, Odysseus. Poseidon also interferes when Odysseus sails from Ogygia because the god wanted Odysseus to understand that without the gods, man is nothing.
