Antigone is a character that is not like the other females in the tragedy. She is a hero and a martyr. Antigone expresses her personality and opinions in the face of authority and oppression. Her determination and single-minded perseverance to bury her brother, Polynices, made her a unique character. Even her sister, Ismene, begged her to not meddle in the business of men and that they should behave like ladies. Antigone disregarded her sister's warning and fought for what she believed in. Her tragedy is that she was a pure girl of royal blood who was about to experience love with her fiance and the thrill of starting a family, but her life was cut short by this tragic event. Her suicide influenced Haemon's death which influenced Eurydice's death. Antigone's gender enhances her role as a heroic figure. The females in Antigone have less influence and power compared to men, but Antigone's actions broke through that barrier and showed that women can follow their own believes rather than depending on the opinions of men. Her actions were supported by the locals of the kingdom and they viewed her a hero who fought against the tyranny of Creon and her kingdom.

Creon is Antigone's uncle and the king of Thebes in the tragedy. Creon was next in line for power after Oedipus's sons had killed themselves in the civil war. Creon interests are in his political and social order. He stressed ruling the kingdom through proper law and discipline. He follows his ideas of good sense and simplicity. Creon faced a tragic reversal when he sentenced Antigone to be executed for disobeying his orders. This, in turn, caused his son to disassociate with him and his people to turn away from him. His reversal is that he tried to maintain the kingdom but as a result isolated himself from everyone. After Haemon found Antigone dead, he drew his sword against his father and then stabbed himself out of grief. Haemon's death was too overwhelming for his mother, Eurydice, and she killed herself as a result. Creon is left alone without his wife and son and the whole kingdom looks down upon him. He was a reasonable man who wanted to keep peace by doing it his way and as a result of his determination and single-minded perseverance had caused the tragic results.
