Gawain and the Green Knight

The changing seasons complements the figure of the giant knight, who appeared as the Green Knight and Lord Bertilak, as well as Gawain's conditions/emotions throughout his trials. The detailed descriptions of the changing seasons begins with Gawain's departure from Camelot to find the Green Knight. The setting first starts off on a New Year's Eve with a festival at King Arthur's court and it seems to be joyful, bright, and warm. After Gawain severed the Green Knight's head with his axe, the knight reiterates the terms of the pact. The knight reminded Gawain to seek him in a year at the Green Chapel. Autumn is the season that starts off Gawain's journey to find the Green Knight. As the journey continues, the weather and atmosphere seems to grow colder and denser. Gawain encountered and fought many beasts along the journey, growing more desperate, hungry, and cold. Upon Christmas Day, Gawain found a castle and hospitality from the hosts (sign of hope). The host, who is Lord Bertilak, initiates a game with Gawain to test his morals and chivalry. Gawain lost the "game" by taking the girdle that was said to protect whoever wears it from death. On New Year's Day, Gawain set off to find the Green Knight at the Green Chapel. When Gawain arrived at the chapel, the Green Knight greeted him and Gawain was determined to fulfill his contract. The knight delivered three faint blows to Gawain's neck and Gawain got angry, claiming that the contract had been fulfilled. The Knight revealed that he was the Lord of the castle and he was only testing Gawain's characters and chivalry. Gawain wears the girdle as a sign of his cowardice and embraced his failure.

The changes in the season represents Gawain's journey and emotions. At King Arthur's New Year's Festival, Gawain was most likely happy and joyful which reflected the warm and bright weather. As time gets closer for Gawain to seek the Green Knight, the season changes to cold and uneasy winter. When Gawain arrived at the Green Chapel on New Year's Day again, the knight is presented as the Green knight which corresponds with the warm and summer-like weather. The color of green represents warmth and life. When the knight is presented as Lord Bertilak, with his beard "of a beaver's hue," the color brown represents the winter time and the deep brown barks of the winter trees with no leaves. A cold, barren, life-less setting is presented with the cold season. The use of seasonal change as a role of the character's journey maybe found in Beowulf.
